Statutory Declaration (SD) vs swearing before God or on the Quran, or both, Islam Hadhari style

Yesterday we had another Statutory Declaration (SD) to add to the many existing SDs implicating those walking in the corridors of power. This latest SD reveals the masterminds behind 1998 conspiracy against Anwar Ibrahim. Then last night, it was reported that Najib Tun Razak had sworn before God in Guar Perahu that he never met the murdered Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibu. Yes it is the season for swearing – you swear in front the Commisioner of Oaths or you swear in God’s name, or on the Quran (preferably holding the Quran on your left hand just like Saiful did), or both, Islam Hadhari style. It is Statutory Declaration vs swearing before God or on the Quran, or both, Islam Hadhari style.
SD is a non religious oath and there are punitive measures for wrongful declarations. The entire administration of Government relies on such declarations from people to function eg passport applications, financial statements, court documents etc.
There are many SDs still ‘under police investigation’ namely SD by Raja Petra Kamarudin (RPK) against Deputy Prime Minister’s wife Rosmah Mansor aka Dotty, SD by private investigator P. Balasubramaniam implicating Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak in the murder of Altantuya Shaaribuu, SD made by Dr Mohammed Osman Abdul Hamid of Hospital Pusrawi who examined Saiful Bukhari and the latest SD by Nallakaruppan’s driver, Thagarajoo a/l Thangavelu revealing the conspirators behind sodomy charges against Anwar Ibrahim back in 1998. Did I miss any SD?
We have a very obvious pattern here. After a SD is made, individuals named in the SD would deny any wrongdoings (according to Pak Lah, it is normal for people to deny any wrongdoings), some smart-arse (normally from UMNO-led government leaders) would say these SDs are fitnahs (slanders) and not true at all, it is a despicable act to ‘manipulate’ SD for political gain bla bla bla (even when the investigation to verify the SD yet to be carried out), police would give standard answer ‘we will investigate’.
Yes, rest assure they will investigate. They would go and ransack the person’s house who published the SD, detain individuals who made the SD or probably ‘talk’ to them. Then on the next day you would have a new SD to ‘replace’ the old SD! After that, these witnesses would go missing. Where is Bala now? Dr Osman? Missing into thin air.
Then we shall not forget the ever efficient and truthful mainstream media – TV3, NST, The Star, Utusan Melayu, Berita Harian then would carry the news casting doubts on the credibility of the SD. Some press are good at doing this, subtlely injecting their ‘opinions’ while some are downright biased honest. Not everyone can do a Joceline Tan or V.K Chin, what more to outshine the great Wong Chun Wai.
Swearing before God or on Quran or both, Islam Hadhari style
Swearing before God or on Quran or both, Islam Hadhari style is preferably done with a registered UMNO member Imam witnessing the swearing ‘ceremony’ (better if coincidentally he is a registered voter at the area your opponent is contesting soon.) So far we have Ezam Mohd Nor with his sumpah keramat (sacred oath) where he swore he would never rejoin Umno even if he died and was reborn and the last I heard he is going to do another sumpah, God knows what sumpah he wants to do this time (Sure is not sumpah Mahsuri but trust him to come up with another sumpah, after all he’s the GrandMaster of Sumpah. I hope it is not sumpah orang minyak?), sumpah laknat (Curse-my-seven-generations-oath) by Saiful Bukhari confessing his bunghole was violated and last night sumpah aku tak kenal (I-don’t-know-and-never-met-the-person oath) by Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak denying knowing or meeting Altantuya Shaaribuu.
I don’t know if swearing on the Bible or Quran carries more weight than SD. But it seems certain people especially UMNO leaders and its hardcore supporters totally believe in this. To be fair, we need to see the pattern for sumpah (oath) made before God or the Quran or both as well.
Never in history before we had anyone swearing before God or holy books to implicate another person of crime or to prove his innocence, so we can only based our observation on the latest events.
First, you need to have a person accusing someone of wrongdoings (this doesn’t apply now because we just had someone accused of wrongdoings by someone making an oath last night) making an oath using God’s name, holding Quran on his left hand and witnessed by an Imam in a mosque. The timing of the oath must be perfect, synchronised to suit the current political situation. However, remember to state later when questioned, it was purely coincidental that the oath took place at such perfect timing. People will believe you because in Malaysia everything happened by coincidence. That is a well accepted fact now.
Then you have it televised or reported widely using the ever efficient and truthful mainstream media. Leaders (again normally from UMNO) would make statements to support the oath and it is best to get some religious honchos figures to appear on television saying the oath was done in accordance to the religion.
Leaders with big balls would up the ante by challenging other party to swear before God or the Quran or both by insinuating only a person who dares to take an oath before God or holy books or both is innocent and is telling nothing but the truth. Make people believe ‘swearing before God or holy books or both = innocent = telling the truth’.
Next, have it played over and over again over the media, on the street, on by election campaign and have the great columnist writing good things about the person who took the oath, for example saying how handsome he is.
That is pretty much end of the story for swearing before God or the Quran or both. You do not need the police to investigate, save taxpayers money, you have no missing witnesses. You just have to believe.
On one side you have people swearing in front the Commissioner of Oaths where the court and rule of law is the witness. Then on another side you have individuals swearing before God or on the Quran or both and Islam Hadhari is the witness.
So which one you believe? Statutory Declaration or swearing before God, or on the Quran or both, Islam Hadhari style?
ps: barbie thinks, if in this Islam Hadhari ‘God’ we trust then the courts can go to hell! We all can go to hell. Not that he said Islam Hadhari, not Islam. There is no such thing as swearing on the Quran in Islam, as far as he knows.
