GEORGE TOWN: Two PAS leaders and a preacher were each fined RM2,000 in default of 14 days’ jail for taking part in an unlawful assembly protesting against a forum organised by a group called Article 11 two years ago.
Magistrate Ainul Shahrin Mohamad said the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable doubt the case against preacher Shahul Hamid M.P.H Seeni, 33, religious teacher Mohammed Hafiz Mohamed Nordin, 38, and social activist Rahim Ismail, 57.
Mohammed Hafiz is the state PAS Youth chief and chairman of Badan Antara Dakwah (Badai) while Rahim is the Bukit Bendera PAS division deputy chief.
The three were part of a protest group that disrupted a forum titled Federal Constitution: Protection for All held at the hotel. The forum was organised by Article 11, an umbrella group of 13 non-governmental organisations.
Assistant public prosecutor G.S. Tan pressed for a deterrent sentence in the interest of the public, saying that dispersing the crowd incurred costs and the incident also caused a traffic jam in the area.
“Although the three are ustaz (religious teachers), they have to be law-abiding and apply for a permit to have a gathering,” she said.
Erm, but Mr. Policeman and Mr. Prosecutor……..how about these people, har ?????????????

Some 500 Umno members and supporters staged a brief protest outside the Penang state government office in Komtar this afternoon.
The crowd – which gathered there after Friday prayers around 2.30pm – chanted slogans such as ‘Don’t sideline the Malays’ and ‘Do not abolish the NEP’.
Upon being instructed by the police, the crowd dispersed some 15 minutes later. No untoward incidents were reported.
The protest, led by Penang Umno secretary Azhar Ibrahim, to protest Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s declaration that the new DAP-led state government would do away with the New Economic Policy (NEP) policies.
